About Freedom Crossing Monument

Freedom Crossing by Niagara County artist Susan Geissler is located on the bank of the Niagara River in Lewiston, New York, near the Silo. This bronze sculpture honors the courage of freedom seekers who sought a new life of freedom in Canada, as well as the volunteers who protected and helped them on their journey across the Niagara River. It highlights the historical importance of the Niagara River as a gateway to freedom on the Underground Railroad during the mid-19th century. The monument depicts a mother, father, and child ready to be taken across the river to safety by Josiah Tryon. The fifth individual depicted is Laura Eastman, the heroine of Margaret Goff Clark’s classic historical novel, Freedom Crossing. Each character bears secret codes for the public to find.
