Asphalt Art Project Set To Begin

Installation Schedule & Details

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls, is about to undertake an asphalt art project at the intersection of Main Street, Portage Road, and Pierce Avenue. The design will include 2 wide crosswalks, 5 curb extension murals, and an intersection island mural. Not only will this add beauty through art, it will improve pedestrian and driver safety at this busy intersection. This project is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, an organization that supports arts-driven tactical urbanism projects that improve street safety, revitalize public space, engage local communities, and drive economic development.

Traffic Data and Evaluation

The intersection will be closed to vehicular traffic from Monday, October 6 at 8 a.m. until Friday, October 10 at approximately 4 p.m. Traffic, including school buses and NFTA passenger buses, will be rerouted to nearby streets. All detours will be clearly marked and communicated through City channels. During installation, the intersection will remain open to pedestrian traffic, and businesses are encouraged to remain open during this week. Parking south on Main Street and Portage Road will not be interrupted. Business patrons who park in this location will need to make a five-point turn to exit the area.

Over the course of three months, NFNHA staff members observed the intersection at.

Main Street and Portage Road for common traffic behaviors and statistics. These included:

Car speeds
Bicyclists
Pedestrians
Jaywalkers
Cars parked illegally, deliveries, and maintenance workers

Observations were held during two time periods: 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM (green on graphs) and 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM (yellow on graphs).

How Art Can Change the Intersection: Asphalt Art Safety Study

Collaboration with the City

In 2022, Bloomberg Philanthropies released the Asphalt Art Safety Study, which examined the impact of art in the streetscape by comparing historical crash rates and real-time behavior of motorists and pedestrians at 22 asphalt art sites before and after the projects were installed.

The Main Street, Portage Road, and Pierce Avenue intersection is heavily trafficked and currently unsafe for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and the City of Niagara Falls are working together to strengthen city infrastructure that supports the safety of everyone in our communities. This project will also serve as a model for future art initiatives that have the power to reshape the way we experience our cities. All relevant city departments have reviewed and approved this plan.

About the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area

Founded in 1895, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center (NFMMC) has a long tradition of serving the Niagara community. NFMMC’s hospital and primary stroke program are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, and its primary care network is accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Memorial's inpatient services include a cardiac/stroke unit, a medical–surgical unit, an ICU, a Labor and Delivery unit, and an Adult Inpatient Psychiatry unit, the only one of its kind in Niagara County. Memorial serves as a Center for Community Health by operating five primary care centers, a large outpatient adult mental health clinic, a Health Home, and several innovative community-based services. Thanks to a partnership with Catholic Health, Kaleida Health, and Erie County Medical Center, NFMMC operates the only cardiac catheterization laboratory in Niagara County. "Beyond the Murals" Exhibit Opening, April 12th, at Power City Eatery

Join us for the opening of "Beyond the Murals: A Conversation with Our Neighbors" at Power City Eatery on Saturday, April 12, from 2–4 p.m.

Lead photographer Sara Heidinger collaborated with two apprentices, Kayleigh Day and Ja'Nar Gilmer Bradberry, to document the voices and stories of individuals living in our community, beyond the murals.

Through Sara’s lens, each portrait is a tribute to the unique journeys of her subjects, captured with authenticity and respect. The intimate act of photographing someone while listening to their story allows her to form deep, meaningful connections—bringing their experiences to light in a powerful way.

This project is funded by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) through a grant from the New York State Health Foundation. In every initiative, the NFNHA seeks to connect people to the vibrant history of the Niagara region through historic preservation, protecting archives, and amplifying the personal stories of people who shaped the Niagara Region through their lives and choices. The NFNHA understands that history is not static, but a bridge to the future, where people can impact a place. They believe that interpretation and educational programming guides people to gain a sense of place and be inspired by those who are seeking change today.

Congressman Kennedy Announces Over $73,000 in Federal Funding for Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Research

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) joined Sara Capen, Executive Director of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino, Legislator Jeffrey Elder, Niagara Falls NAACP President Renae Kimble, Niagara Falls Council Member Brian Archie, Niagara Falls Council President Jim Perry, and Mark Mistretta, Western Region Director, NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center to announce $73,214 in federal funding for archaeological excavation and research at the site of the historic Cataract House.

“Niagara Falls has long been a beacon of liberty, and the Cataract House played a vital role in that legacy,” said Congressman Kennedy. “This funding will give us a greater understanding of the past, ensuring that future generations understand the sacrifices made by those who fought for the fundamental right to freedom. By preserving this critical history, we reaffirm our commitment to telling the full and unvarnished story of America’s past.”

“The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center is thrilled to be a recipient of the National Park Service Network to Freedom award,” said Sara Beilein Capen, Executive Director, Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. “Now more than ever, it is vital that the history of the Underground Railroad and Black Activism in Niagara Falls is preserved, protected and honored.”

“It is important that the legacy of African American ancestors fight for freedom is continually memorialized so that the complete history of America is never forgotten,” said Renae Kimble, President, NAACP, Niagara Falls Branch. “The Cataract House served as a place of refuge for many slaves who were fortunate enough to survive the dangerous journey through the south on their quest to escape slavery. Harriet Tubman and other abolitionists of the Underground Railroad assisted many slaves with their crossing the border at Niagara Falls to enter Canada where they were finally able to be freed from the institution of slavery. This grant will assist in ensuring that the stories of the many unnamed slaves and unnamed supporters are unearthed and documented so that we will never forget their valiant fight for freedom, justice, equality and inclusion as full fledged American citizens. Obtaining this grant show us that Congressman Kennedy understands the importance of preserving the history of freedom that was made right here in the City Niagara Falls.”

BACKGROUND

This funding, amounting to $73,214, awarded through the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program , will support efforts for the Cataract House to conduct archaeological excavation and research about Underground Railroad activism in Niagara Falls. The Cataract House, once located on the banks of the Niagara River, was more than a hotel — it was a key hub of the Underground Railroad. Its free Black waitstaff, led by figures like John Morrison, risked their lives to ferry enslaved individuals across the river to freedom in Canada. The federal funding will support excavation efforts to further uncover artifacts and historical insights from this important site.

In recent months, a federal funding freeze threatened this grant and similar projects across the country. However, thanks to the advocacy of community leaders and national organizations, the freeze was lifted, allowing critical preservation work to move forward.

In his remarks, Kennedy highlighted his commitment for protecting federal funding for projects like this one, saying, “The federal funding freeze put this grant in jeopardy. Thanks to the persistence of advocates and community groups, that freeze was lifted, allowing this project and others to move forward. Now, it is more important than ever to stand up as a community and defend institutions like the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center and the Cataract House. In Congress, there is strong bipartisan support for the work of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and those like it across the country, and I will defend funding for projects like this one in the upcoming budget process.”

National Trust for Historic Preservation Announces Major Expansion of Historic Artists' Homes and Studios Program

The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced today the addition of 19 new affiliate sites to its prestigious Historic Artists' Homes and Studios (HAHS) membership network, representing the largest expansion of the program since its founding in 2000. This landmark expansion also comes during HAHS' 25th anniversary year and marks a historic milestone in the program's evolution.2

HAHS is a peer-to-peer coalition of sites that brings these museums together to conserve the legacy of creativity in the visual arts in the United States. This network of sites leverages the knowledge and experience of individual members to benefit the entire coalition in critical areas, including historic preservation, visitor and community programming, and communications. The Affiliate category was created in 2022 in order to broaden pathways for entrance into the program for sites that may not follow traditional models of operation, interpretation, or visitation.

The acceptance of these Affiliate members into the HAHS program marks a significant benchmark in HAHS' ongoing commitment to diversifying the consortium to present a more complete picture of American artistic achievement. The new class notably includes numerous sites representing the legacy of women artists, HAHS' first sites presenting both Asian American and Indigenous artist experiences including a Japanese American and South Korean American artist couple’s former loft in lower Manhattan, and the workspaces of several generations of Native artists in both the Northwest and Plains regions. Two sites created by self- taught Black artists in western New York and in Mississippi are opening to the public. These diverse locations span multiple states and represent various artistic movements and time periods in our nation’s art history. From intimate studio spaces to expansive compounds, artist-designed buildings and landscapes to sprawling vernacular art environments, each site provides visitors with an authentic experience of the places where inspirational art was conceived and created.

These new additions bring the total number of HAHS member sites to 80, across 31 states in the nation, further strengthening the program's mission to advocate and support the preservation and interpretation of site-specific artistic heritage for the benefit of the public and future generations. Several of these new members have been part of HAHS’ extended community for years, accessing the program’s unique resources throughout preservation efforts, and the transition from private home to public museum.

“It is an honor to welcome 19 new sites into the HAHS network during this anniversary year,” said HAHS Director Valerie Balint. “This extremely diverse group represents the richness and breadth of place-based art legacy in this country. It has been a pleasure to witness some of these sites evolve from nascent preservation initiatives to spaces of meaningful public engagement and to welcome them into membership alongside other more established sites that are at important moments of new expansion, innovation, and storytelling. All these new Affiliate sites have much to offer the public audiences they serve, but also their peers within the existing HAHS coalition. As with each site within HAHS, these inspirational new Affiliates are all worth a pilgrimage to experience.”

The Beer Can House , Houston, TX | The Beer Can House is a significant folk art environment created by John Milkovisch (1912–1988), who transformed his ordinary home into an architectural wonder by covering it with thousands of aluminum beer cans, tabs, and tops arranged into shimmering curtains, mobiles, and wind chimes. The site features not only the mesmerizing metallic exterior, but also unique concrete pathways embedded with marbles, rocks, and colorful found objects. Now preserved by the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, this one-of-a-kind home showcases the creative potential of everyday materials while offering visitors the chance to explore both the decorated exterior and interior spaces where Milkovisch lived and worked on his unusual artistic vision.
Carolee Schneemann Foundation , New Paltz, NY | The Foundation, housed in a historic 1750s residence, preserves the home and studio where pioneering artist Carolee Schneemann (1939–2019) lived and worked from 1965 until her death, including her extensive personal library, archives, and artistic interventions embedded throughout the structure. The house itself serves as a living archive, featuring original elements that appeared in Schneemann's iconic works while containing her meticulously organized archives of over 2,000 books, photographs, slides, and documents that provide insight into her creative process. Open by appointment only, visitors can experience the intimate connection between the artist's domestic life and her groundbreaking artistic practice through features like hand-painted tiles, collaged walls, and her preserved in-house studio containing works in progress from her final projects.
Dog Mountain, Home of Stephen Huneck Gallery , St. Johnsbury, VT | A unique property that combines a landscape decorated with outdoor sculptures, a dog-friendly park, and an art gallery showcasing the whimsical wood carvings and prints of folk artist Stephen Huneck (1948–2010) . At its heart stands the Dog Chapel, a structure inspired by New England meeting houses that features dog-themed architectural details, stained glass windows with dog portraits, and walls covered in visitors' photos and memories of beloved pets. The site welcomes visitors and their four-legged companions to freely explore hiking trails, swimming ponds, and fields of wildflowers while experiencing Huneck's vision of a place that celebrates the healing power of dogs, nature, art, and love.
The Emile Brunel Studio/Residence and Sculpture Park , Boiceville, NY | The sculpture garden and multi-arts center boasts a collection of concrete sculptures created by pioneering photographer and founder of the New York Institute of Photography, Emile Brunel (1874–1944) . The site bridges multiple cultural legacies, housing both Brunel's century-old statuary and serving as a platform for celebrating the Indigenous heritage of the Munsee Esopus Lenape people through educational programs and an artist-in-residence program. The property, which includes Brunel's original Studio/Residence, is situated along the Catskill Park, and combines art preservation, nature sanctuary, and cultural education in one distinctive location.
Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village , Simi Valley, CA | A remarkable folk art environment featuring thirty-five sculptural structures (including 15 bottle houses) built entirely from discarded materials, with walls crafted from tens of thousands of glass bottles collected from local dumps. Created over nearly 30 years by self-taught artist Tressa “Grandma” Prisbrey (1896–1988) starting at age 60, the site showcases incredible architectural ingenuity and artistic vision through its colorful bottle-walled buildings, mosaic pathways decorated with found objects, and whimsical features. This one-of-a-kind folk art landmark, one of the earliest and most significant women-made art environments in the United States, offers guided tours where visitors can experience Prisbrey's creative reuse of everyday materials and her humorous, resourceful approach to architecture and environmental art.
The Jacobson House , Norman, OK | The Native art center served as both residence and artistic sanctuary for Oscar Jacobson (1882–1966) , the influential director of the University of Oklahoma School of Art, and the groundbreaking Kiowa Six , indigenous artists who had studio space in this home. The house, built in 1916-17 with distinctive Swedish architectural elements, was designed to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces through its generous windows, deep porches, and elaborate gardens. Now serving as a gallery and cultural center, the Jacobson House continues its legacy of fostering Native American art and culture through exhibitions, workshops, and educational events, while preserving the unique space where Oscar Jacobson helped launch a watershed moment in 20th-century American Indian art.
Langlais Art Preserve , Cushing, ME | The art preserve offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore over a dozen large-scale wooden sculptures created by artist Bernard Langlais (1921–1977) along an accessible quarter-mile path winding through meadows and woodlands overlooking the St. George River. The 90-acre site includes a seasonally open Barn Studio that showcases smaller sculptures and offers hands-on art activities inspired by Langlais’s creative process, as well as his preserved workshop, filled with his tools and works-in-progress. Beyond the outdoor sculpture garden, visitors can enjoy over two miles of woodland hiking trails and experience how Langlais's vision of integrating art with the natural landscape continues to evolve through conservation efforts and new artistic programming.
Lelooska Foundation & Cultural Center , Ariel, WA | Visitors to the Lelooska Foundation receive a rare opportunity to experience authentic Native American arts, performances, and cultural traditions in a historic setting that has served as both home and creative space for Indigenous artists since the 1960s. The site features two ceremonial houses where it presents living history programs with traditional Northwest Coast masks, songs, and dances passed down through generations, alongside a museum housing over 600 Native American artifacts and artworks. What makes this place truly special is its continuous legacy as both a working artist studio and educational center, where visitors can witness traditional Native arts being actively practiced and taught while exploring the original home and workshop of Chief Lelooska (1962–1996) , which has been carefully preserved to maintain its historic character.
Louise Bourgeois Home/The Easton Foundation , New York, NY | The Easton Foundation, housed in two historic Chelsea townhouses in Manhattan, preserves the former home and studio of renowned sculptor Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) . The site offers an intimate glimpse into Bourgeois's creative world, featuring one of her iconic spider sculptures in the shared garden, her preserved living spaces, and an extensive archive of her personal effects including diaries, clothing, and art materials. This site includes a small exhibition space presenting artworks and archival materials, and the carefully maintained historic spaces where one of the past century's most influential artists developed her revolutionary sculptural forms. Access is currently limited to pre-scheduled group tours, most of which are arranged through cultural and educational institutions.
L.V. Hull Home & Studio , Kosciusko, MS | The site represents a remarkable fusion of home and artistic canvas, where self-taught artist L.V. Hull (1942–2008) transformed every surface into an evolving art environment through vibrantly painted found objects, creative assemblages, and carefully curated collections of cherished items. The site is the first home-studio of an African American female visual artist to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the national level, and the first home of any African American art environment creator to receive this recognition. While the original artwork has been preserved offsite, visitors can still experience Hull's creative imprint through the sun-faded outlines on the walls, her signature multicolored dots on the bathroom sink, and the original nails that once held her dense artistic displays, all of which will be incorporated into the site's interpretation when it opens to the public.
Mary Nohl Art Environment , Fox Point, WI | A notable artist-created home where Mary Nohl (1914–2001) transformed every aspect of the property, from the house itself to the 59 concrete sculptures dotting the landscape, into a comprehensive work of art. While public access is carefully limited to preserve the site, those who visit receive an intimate guided tour exploring Nohl's creative vision through both the physical space and archival materials like her personal diaries and correspondence. The site stands as one of the most important artist-built environments preserved in America, particularly significant for its creation by a woman artist in the mid-20th century. Access is limited to pre-scheduled group tours arranged through the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.
Olive Rush Studio & Art Center , Santa Fe, NM | The Art Center preserves the historic home, studio, and garden of pioneering artist Olive Rush (1873–1966) , who transformed this 100-year-old adobe house into a vibrant artistic and social hub where she painted each day, hosted fellow artists, and mentored Native American painters. The property combines Rush's original frescoes and painted furniture with her orchard (including remnant two-hundred year old apple trees) and historic garden, where she entertained at tea parties and maintained a bountiful selection of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. This intimate museum, in its inaugural year of operation, offers visitors a rare glimpse into the life of one of Santa Fe's most influential women artists, known for breaking artistic boundaries by combining modernist techniques with Indigenous art influences while fostering a supportive creative community in the Southwest in the early 20th century.
Pope's Museum , Ochlocknee, GA | Pope’s Museum is the oldest surviving artist-built environment created by a woman in the United States. It was the home of Laura Pope Forester (1873–1953) , who is one of the few documented female artists in the early 20th century to create such an extensive outdoor art installation. The site showcases 20 original sculptures and dozens of murals created by Pope Forester using her own mortar mixture, including striking tributes to women's achievements, military veterans, and literary figures, all crafted by this self-taught artist who broke cultural barriers of her time. Visitors can tour the restored 2-story home with its unique architectural features like a balcony made from sewing machine parts, explore the historic gardens filled with heirloom plants, and view the impressive 100-foot-wide World War II memorial wall that all stand as testament to Pope Forester's artistic vision.
Prophet Isaiah Robertson’s Second Coming House , Niagara Falls, NY | Striking art environment created by Prophet Isaiah Robertson (1947–2020) , a self-taught artist who transformed his home into an immersive religious artwork, featuring a dramatic 25-foot painted cross and intricate religious imagery crafted from wood, paint, and beadwork both inside and outside the property. As the only artist-built environment of its kind in Western New York, the site showcases Robertson's divinely-inspired creativity through painstakingly preserved and recreated elements, including his signature "perfectly imperfect" painting style and symbolic religious artworks. Opened earlier this year, visitors can experience this unique cultural landmark through guided tours that explore themes of immigration, religious expression, and artistic vision, while learning about Robertson's remarkable journey from Jamaican carpenter to visionary artist.
Reuben Hale House , West Palm Beach, FL | The house and sculpture garden offer visitors an intimate look into the life and work of distinguished artist and educator Reuben Hale (1927–2018) , showcasing his diverse artistic legacy through sculptures, paintings, drawings, holograms, and photographs displayed throughout the 1925 Mediterranean Revival home where he lived and worked for nearly 50 years. The property features over 200 of Hale's works, much of which highlights his enduring artistic theme of the 'Emerging Woman,' reflecting his belief in women's profound impact on society. This historic site, located in the El Cid Historic District, preserves not only Hale's artwork but also his living and working spaces exactly as he designed them, from his handcrafted furniture to his architectural modifications of the house itself.
Shigeko Kubota Video Art Foundation , New York, NY | The foundation, located in a historic SoHo loft, preserves the living and working space of pioneering video artists Shigeko Kubota (1937–2015) and Nam June Paik (1932–2006) , who occupied the space from the 1970s until 2015. The raw loft space remains largely unchanged since the artists' time there, with approximately 80 percent dedicated to artmaking and featuring their original video works, archives, and personal effects displayed in their original positions. As one of the last remaining "Fluxhouses"—artist cooperative buildings established by Fluxus founder George Maciunas—the site offers visitors a rare glimpse into both the birth of video art and SoHo's transformation into an artists' community through by-appointment tours that include access to extensive multi-media sculpture, video, photo, and paper archives.
S.P. Dinsmoor’s Cabin Home and Garden of Eden , Lucas, KS | S.P. Dinsmoor (1843–1932) created the sprawling sculpture garden, featuring a three-story limestone "log cabin" that he built as both a home and an artistic statement about Populist politics. The site showcases Dinsmoor's innovative concrete sculpting techniques, including elaborate biblical and political scenes featuring 150+ life-sized figures that tell allegorical stories about corporate greed, labor rights, and social justice through interconnected tableaus rising to three stories high. This unique art environment also includes Dinsmoor's final resting place–a concrete mausoleum he built himself where visitors can still view his preserved body in a glass-lidded coffin of his own construction.
Spiral House Park , Saugerties, NY | In its first year of public operation, Spiral House Park is set on 45 acres of transformed bluestone quarry in the Catskills, featuring a stunning five-story spiral house and more than 40 large-scale sculptures made of hand-cut bluestone, crystal glass, and stainless steel, all created by artist Tom Gottsleben (1950–2019) . The centerpiece Rainbow Portal, a 31-foot-diameter circle of twelve archways made of stone and colored crystal glass, casts colorful reflections by day and glows magically at night. The home and art are interconnected by meandering landscape walls and extensive native gardens that showcase the intersection of sacred geometry and nature, with 1.5 miles of woodland trails, all set against dramatic mountain views.
Valley of the Moon , Tucson, AZ | A garden landscape created by visionary artist George Phar Legler (1885–1982) as an immersive fantasyland designed to promote kindness and tolerance through magical experiences. The site features twenty-six distinct historic structures built in a unique Storybook Style, using concrete, chicken wire, and recycled materials to create an enchanted landscape specifically scaled for children's perspectives. True to its founding mission of inclusion, the site continues to serve diverse communities today, offering specialized programming for underserved groups including transgender and gender non-conforming youth, while maintaining its century-old tradition of theatrical adventures that promote kindness and acceptance for all.

NFTA Announces Call for Art to Celebrate Black History Month

BUFFALO, N.Y. , - The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), in collaboration with the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, is excited to announce another year of celebrating moving art through Black History! The NFTA is calling on local artists from across Western New York to submit original artwork for its Black History Month art contest. The winning design will be showcased on NFTA-Metro buses throughout February 2025 and beyond. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Black Culture”. Artists are encouraged to create eye-catching and colorful work that honors the trends and concepts Black culture has inspired throughout history. Submitted artwork can be new or existing. Upon selection, the Grand Prize winner will be paid a flat fee of $1,500 for their artistic contribution. The due date for the artwork is Friday, December 13, 2024

Project Specifications

The ability to create and submit high-quality digital files is required.
Artwork is to be designed for full-color digital images for printing on vinyl to be applied on an NFTA-Metro bus.
The selected artist can create the imagery in any medium, but digital artwork must be submitted using these applications and file types:
Adobe CC or Illustrator (ai|eps|pdf) CMYK
InDesign (indd|pdf) CMYK Photoshop (psd|eps|) CMYK
If the image includes fonts, they must be outlined within the artwork.
All layout files must be packaged and bundled to include all linked images and fonts.

The final selection will be made by the NFTA’s African American Heritage Committee. Selected artists will be required to work with the NFTA’s graphic team to provide revisions for reproduction. Artists’ work may be used on NFTA’s social media platforms. All copyrights are reserved for NFTA.

Artist Yetti Frankel recently completed a new mural titled "Discover the Future: Explore the Past" at Harry F. Abate Elementary School in Niagara Falls, NY. This stunning artwork, part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, represents yet another successful collaboration between our team and the Niagara Falls City School District.

The mural combines painted 4x8' panels with intricate mosaics, creating a breathtaking display overlooking the school’s playground. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dean & Phillips Renovations LLC for their expertise and support during the installation. Despite the physical challenges posed by the nature of the artwork, their construction experience was invaluable in bringing Yetti’s vision to life.

NFNHA Sponsors Peace and Justice Studies Association Conference at NU

Niagara University is the host of the 2024 Peace and Justice Studies Association’s annual conference, which will bring more than 300 scholars to Monteagle Ridge Oct. 24-27. This year’s theme is “We Are All Connected: Fostering Intersectionality and Solidarity.”

Among the featured events is a Haudenosaunee thanksgiving address and Buddhist Monk chant for peace, a plenary event illuminating the conference theme through the perspective of Indigenous scholars and activists, a tribute to trailblazer Betty Reardon that includes and discusses women involved in international peacebuilding, an Augusto Boal Theatre of the Oppressed interactive session, and a tour of Love Canal with environmental activist and Niagara University alumna Luella Kenny.

Members of the Western New York community will also receive awards from the PJSA at the conference for their commitment to justice: Stitch Buffalo will receive the Organizing for Peace and Justice Award, Geraldine Pointer will receive the Social Courage Award, and Jasiah Jackson-Hackett and Charlynn Rivera of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Area will receive the Next Generation Award.

Co-sponsoring the conference with Niagara University and its Vincentian Center for Justice are the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and the Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence at James Madison University.

The Vincentian Center for Justice is founded on the mission of reimagining what is possible for college students in today’s world. The premise is that college education should have value and meaning, and the VCJ seeks to empower students to achieve their dreams by creating a learning community centered on the pursuit of justice; critically examining the meaning of justice and its denial; imparting knowledge of struggles for justice, past and present; illuminating the intersection and interconnectedness of justice struggles across contexts and levels of human interaction; providing models and tools that will empower students; building a just community premised on equality, cooperation and other shared values; and inspiring the members of our community to pursue their vocations as advocates for justice.

Beacon of Hope Arrives in Niagara Falls

Harriet Tubman Traveling Monument installed at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center

Niagara Falls, NY –On Wednesday, October 16th, “Beacon of Hope”, the 13-foot bronze statue, created by Academy and Emmy Award-winning sculptor Wesley Wofford of Wofford Sculpture Studio, arrived in Niagara Falls. The monument is on loan from Wofford Sculpture Studio and will be on temporary exhibit from October 16th, 2024 to January 2nd, 2025, in the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center’s Harriet Tubman Plaza.

The exhibition of the “Beacon of Hope” monument at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center commemorates Harriet Tubman’s journeys to freedom through Niagara Falls via the International Suspension Bridge – originally located mere steps away from the Heritage Center and the current location of “Beacon of Hope”.

Born Araminta Ross, Tubman first liberated herself in 1849 by way of Philadelphia. Not even a year later, she would return to Dorchester County, Maryland, to assist many of her family members in their own escapes. She would eventually repeat this journey a dozen more times. After the passage of the 1850s Fugitive Slave Act, Tubman knew that for her family to be completely safe, they would have to make it to Canada. Her goal was St. Catharines, Ontario, by way of Niagara Falls, New York. The International Suspension Bridge that Tubman crossed, bringing dozens of people that she loved into freedom and directing many freedom seekers to, is one of the most important locations on the Underground Railroad.

“Honoring Harriet Tubman’s crossing right here in the historic Suspension Bridge Village, informs more people about owning our own local history,” Saladin Allah, Director of Community Engagement said. “Many people know about the Underground Railroad, but know less about how freedom seekers crossed into the Canadian side, so as a Heritage Center we share those stories of the people who were instrumental in helping people reach the Canadian side.”

“Beacon of Hope” traveled to Niagara Falls from John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid, New York. Previously, she was installed and on display in Peekskill, New York –another important location on the Underground Railroad, and at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, among other locations in the North East. In January 2025, “Beacon of Hope” will depart Niagara Falls and travel to the Woodson African American Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Together, “Beacon of Hope” and the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center commemorate Tubman’s vision, her grit, and her indomitable will that led her to bring so many people to the promised land. A special evening commemorating Harriet Tubman and the monument’s display will be held on Friday, November 15th, 2024, at the Heritage Center from 5pm-8pm, commemorating Tubman’s and other freedom seekers’ journeys in the late autumn and winter months of November and December. This monument reflects the interpretation of the Heritage Center’s award winning exhibits and its commitment to stories of self-agency rooted in freedom, justice and cultural movements. "A Place to Grow," a new mural, has been completed at Harry F. Abate Elementary School in Niagara Falls, NY, as part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. This project brought together school staff, parents, students, and artists Kristy McCarthy, Chris McCarthy, Kaleigh Day, along with volunteers including Mary Jo Edwards, Principal Lynne Tompkins, Vice Principal Allen Cowart, and Freda Cowart. The mural prominently features an open book, highlighting the significance of education and the school's role at the community's core, while also acknowledging the nearby library.

Another mural is slated for completion at the school shortly.

Prophet Isaiah Roberston’s Second Coming House Celebrates Art Preservation Completion & Grand Opening

(Niagara Falls, NY) – The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is delighted to announce the completion of art preservation work at the Prophet Isaiah Robertson’s Second Coming House. On August 9 & 10, 2024, the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area will welcome the Kohler Foundation, B.R. Howard & Associates, distinguished guests, and the entire community to the Opening Weekend of Prophet Isaiah Robertson’s Second Coming House. The House is an artist-built environment envisioned and constructed by Isaiah Robertson, an artist, carpenter, and self-proclaimed prophet who turned his home into an intricate work of art.

Following Isaiah Robertson’s passing in 2020, the Kohler Foundation purchased the home, initiated a preservation process with B.R. Howard & Associates, and gifted the property and artworks to the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area as the long-term steward. This monumental preservation project ensures that this unique art environment remains in the North End of Niagara Falls, allowing it to be cherished for generations to come.

On Friday, August 9, 2024 , the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area will host partners, elected officials, stakeholders, and media for a press conference, private tours and an invite-only reception.

Following, on Saturday, August 10, 2024 , the public is invited to visit the House for its first public viewing of the site from 10am-4pm, followed by an RSVP-required evening reception in the backyard from 5pm-9pm.

10am-4pm - Public Viewing: The public is invited to view the space with Niagara Falls National Heritage Area staff on hand to answer questions, discuss the project, and offer insight on how this unique art environment came to be.

5pm-9pm - Evening Reception: Join us for food and drink on site to celebrate this remarkable community treasure. Established in 1940, the Kohler Foundation since the 1970s has focused on the preservation

of art environments, folk architecture and the collections of self-taught artists. They are at

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) is one of 62 National Heritage Areas in the United

States. Designated by the United States Congress in 2008, its mission is to preserve, promote, and

protect the diverse historic, cultural, and environmental assets of the Niagara region.

Background:

Enacted by Congress in 2008, the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area completed its Management Plan

in 2012 and became an independent non-profit organization in 2013. In the past decade, the NFNHA has

designed, developed and implemented major community-centric and tourism programs, projects and

products. Most notably, the Discover Niagara Shuttle – a free hop-on, hop-off shuttle that was

established in 2017 – the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center – the first cultural

attraction to open in the City of Niagara Falls in over 35 years that was designed, installed, and opened

to the public 2018. These major projects led the way for the NFNHA to position itself as the public arts

leader implementing public art and creative placemaking in the Niagara region.

In 2019, the NFNHA launched its public art program NF Murals, founded with a $160,000 grant from the

New York State Health Foundation. Shortly thereafter the Niagara Falls Heritage Arts program was

formed, the official public art Initiative of the NFNHA. The NFNHA has secured close to 1 million dollars

for current and forthcoming public art projects in the next three years. This immense growth in creative

placemaking has begun to shift the landscape of the City of Niagara Falls and surrounding communities.

Taking an equitable and inclusive approach to all projects, the NFNHA believes that art, and access to art

opportunities, has the potential to address systemic barriers and generate change.

In every initiative, the NFNHA seeks to connect people to the vibrant history of the Niagara region

through historic preservation, protecting archives and amplifying the personal stories of people who

shaped the NFNHA through their life’s and through their life’s choices. The NFNHA understands that

history is not static, but a bridge to the future, where people can impact a place by their life and their

life’s work. We believe that interpretation and educational programming guides people to gain a sense

of place and be inspired by those around them seeking change today.

Position:

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) seeks two part-time Apprentice Photographers for

their project Beyond the Murals: Visual Story Sharing in the Highland Community. The Apprentice

Photographers will learn photography techniques from the Community Photographer, and assist the

Community Photographer in their visual story-sharing work. The Apprentice Photographers will also

assist with presenting community workshops and programming.

Beyond the Murals Project:

Similar to the photography project, “Humans of New York,” this style of documentary includes a portrait

of the subject and a transcription of their words. In our project, we will be taking portraits of HighlandCommunity members and asking them about their COVID-19 experience, and what needs their community faces.

Scope of Work:

There are three main components to this role. The Apprentice Photographers will learn from the

Community Photographer photography techniques, visual story sharing methods, and how to present

community workshops and programming to the public. Apprentice Photographers will also assist with

the community programming directed toward youth and other vulnerable groups, to teach them a new

skill and provide positive and instructive social interactions. Finally, Apprentice Photographers will

interact with Highland Community members, and encourage them to visually share their stories of how

COVID-19 has impacted their lives, and what needs exist in the Highland Community.

This role is designed to encompass approximately 6 – 12 hours per week, and will last until August 31,

2024. Additional time on site can be arranged as necessary. Prospective photographers should be

comfortable with discussions and interactions with community members.

Qualifications:

• Must be 18 years of age or older.

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

• Willingness to learn and share with community members.

• Experience with photography a plus.

Special Requirements:

• Ability to travel to and from various locations within the City of Niagara Falls.

Discover Niagara Shuttle Eclipse Art and Schedule

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area gears up for the awe-inspiring total eclipse on April 8th, 2024 with a stunning, eclipse-themed wrap adorning one of its Discover Niagara Shuttles. This exciting initiative is made possible thanks to a generous grant from AES.

The unique artwork, titled "Eclipse!" by Orchard Park artist Christina Francis, depicts a mythical sea creature rising from the mighty Niagara Falls, reaching towards the sun. Inspired by the rich tapestry of cultural stories that explore the relationship between humans and nature, Francis' creation adds a touch of artistic whimsy to the scientific marvel of the eclipse.

"We're thrilled to showcase Christina's captivating artwork on the Discover Niagara Shuttle thanks to the support of AES," says Sara Capen, Executive Director of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. "This total eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the themed shuttle reflects the excitement and wonder surrounding this celestial event."

The Discover Niagara Shuttle will operate throughout the eclipse period, offering a convenient and scenic transportation option for visitors flocking to the region to witness this extraordinary phenomenon.

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) is one of 62 National Heritage Areas in the United States. Designated by the United States Congress in 2008, its mission is to preserve, promote, and protect the diverse historic, cultural, and environmental assets of the Niagara region.

Background:

Enacted by Congress in 2008, the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area completed its Management Plan in 2012 and became an independent non-profit organization in 2013. In the past decade, the NFNHA has designed, developed and implemented major community-centric and tourism programs, projects and products. Most notably, the Discover Niagara Shuttle – a free hop-on, hop-off shuttle that was established in 2017 – the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center – the first cultural attraction to open in the City of Niagara Falls in over 35 years that was designed, installed, and opened to the public 2018. These major projects led the way for the NFNHA to position itself as the public arts leader implementing public art and creative placemaking in the Niagara region.

In 2019, the NFNHA launched its public art program NF Murals, founded with a $160,000 grant from the New York State Health Foundation. Shortly thereafter the Niagara Falls Heritage Arts program was formed, the official public art Initiative of the NFNHA. The NFNHA has secured close to 1 million dollars for current and forthcoming public art projects in the next three years. This immense growth in creative placemaking has begun to shift the landscape of the City of Niagara Falls and surrounding communities. Taking an equitable and inclusive approach to all projects, the NFNHA believes that art, and access to art opportunities, has the potential to address systemic barriers and generate change.

In every initiative, the NFNHA seeks to connect people to the vibrant history of the Niagara region through historic preservation, protecting archives and amplifying the personal stories of people who shaped the NFNHA through their life’s and through their life’s choices. The NFNHA understands that history is not static, but a bridge to the future, where people can impact a place by their life and their life’s work. Position:

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) seeks a part-time Community Project Photographer (Photographer) for their project:

Beyond the Murals: Visual Story Sharing in the Highland Community.

The Photographer will serve as the project lead, reporting to the Director of Public Art. The Photographer will also supervise, manage and train (as needed) two Apprentice Photographers throughout this project.

Beyond the Murals Project:

Similar to the photography project, “Humans of New York,” this style of documentary includes a portrait of the subject and a transcription of their words. In our project, we will be taking portraits of Highland Community members and asking them about their COVID-19 experience, what needs they and their community have, and stories they would like to tell through artistic experiences.

Scope of Work:

There are three main components to this role. The Community Project Photographer will lead the Photography Apprenticeship and will train two Apprentice Photographers to assist with community programming and visual story sharing work. The Photographer will also develop photography classes directed toward youth and other vulnerable groups, to teach them a new skill and provide positive and instructive social interactions. Finally, the Photographer will interact with Highland Community members, and encourage them to visually share their stories of how COVID-19 has impacted their lives, and what needs exist in the Highland Community.

This role is designed to encompass approximately 25 hours per week, and will last until August 31, 2024. Additional time on site can be arranged as necessary. Prospective photographers should be comfortable with discussions and interactions with community members.

Qualifications:

Previous working experience as a photographer required.
Extensive and eye-catching portfolio.
Hands on experience with modern photography equipment.
In-depth knowledge of photography software.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Outstanding organizational and time management skills.

Public Art Installation Featuring 86 artworks by Niagara Falls Artist Polly King Debuts at Former Jenss Department Store

(Niagara Falls, NY) – The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is thrilled to announce the installation of a new public art project at the former Jenss Department Store on Main Street in Niagara Falls. The installation, Women of Niagara, made possible through funding from the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative, showcases 86 artworks by renowned local artist, Polly King.

Polly King was a prolific artist in Niagara Falls throughout the 20th century who created thousands of artworks throughout her lifetime. She painted the world around her, from the creation and building of the New York State Power Project, scenes from her adopted hometown of Niagara Falls, to abstract works. However, it is her Portrait Collection that is the focus of this new outdoor public art installation. Polly King painted over 450 portraits throughout her life in a diverse range of artistic styles and mediums, representing an amazing cross section of Niagara Falls society in the 20th century. Polly’s portraits present an artistic anthropological study of the community of Niagara Falls, and 74 of those portraits are showcased in the windows of the Jenss building.

Dr. Robin King, granddaughter of Polly, said, “These portraits of women in Niagara Falls from the 1940s through the 1970s chronicle a piece of the social history of our city during its days of economic vibrancy. This installation is a great opportunity to take an under-utilized old building and bring it to life with Polly’s portraits of women from the area done when this building was a major destination on Main Street.”

“In creating these timeless portraits of women, Polly gave us an indelible gift that builds an intersection between place and people. Each of the women featured was a part of Niagara Falls and has a story that is embedded in their own talent, dreams and life,” shared Sara Capen, Executive Director of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. “By connecting them to the iconic Jenss building, a place filled with memory and stories, this project breathes life into Main Street and gives us a peek into the past while posing a question about its future. What does a vibrant and revitalized Main Street look like? Imagine the possibilities.”

The Jenss Department Store building, located at 1708 Main Street, in Niagara Falls, New York, was built in 1916 by the Jenss family. The Jenss Department Store saw decades of prosperity as a hub for shopping and community activity, and was an anchor in the booming and vibrant commercial district that the North End was known for. The Jenss Department store ultimately closed their Main Street location in 1995, along with the long stretch of Main Street businesses that succumbed to city-wide economic decline and urban renewal, leaving Main Street void of commercial activity.

“Many residents have fond memories of growing up around Main Street, and we hear often of Sunday strolls, delicious local cuisine – notably The Royal Chef which was located next to Jenss for many years, late bar nights, and favorite holiday shopping experiences at Jenss and beyond,” said, Ally Spongr DeGon, Director of Public Art for Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. “Our public art work generates new and creative ways and places to share these stories, while activating spaces to encourage visions for the future of Main Street.”

Congressman Brian Higgins said, “Once again demonstrating the incredible value and work of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, this project highlights the unique history and stories of Niagara Falls to grow understanding and dialogue while also enriching the look and feel of the City for residents and visitors alike.”

The public art installation is featured on the exterior windows of the building and viewing is accessible from Main Street and Division Avenue. Visitors are encouraged to walk, bike and take in the grandeur and boldness of the artworks in the unique setting of the historic Jenss building. NFTA Launches its Third Black History Month Art Contest

BUFFALO, N.Y.,- The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), in collaboration with the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, is seeking local artists to submit proposals for art that will be showcased on NFTA-Metro busses in honor of Black History Month. The theme is “Black History of Western New York”and artists are encouraged to be creative and inspiring. Images should be eye-catching, engaging, colorful and should be reflective of “Black History of WNY. Submitted artwork can be new or existing. Upon selection, the Grand Prize winner will be paid a flat fee of $1,500 for their artistic contribution. Due date for the artwork is Friday, December 1, 2023

Project Specifications

• The ability to create and submit high-quality digital files is required.

• Artwork is to be designed for full-color digital image for printing on vinyl to be applied on an NFTA-Metro bus.

• The selected artist can create the imagery in any medium, but the artwork must be submitted using these applications and file types:

New Mural to be Unveiled at The Connection

(Niagara Falls, NY) – The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is excited to unveil a new mural at The Connection on Saturday, October 7th. This mural, made possible through the funding from New York Downtown Revitalization Initiative, was completed by renowned Western New York artist Chuck Tingley, and is located at 1700 Main Street in Niagara Falls. The Connection serves as a safe space for teenagers in the city, and fosters an environment for socializing, building skills, and partaking in activities.

“I’m honored that The Connection was chosen for this project,” stated Shayla Benson, Senior Manager of Outreach & Education at Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York, which oversees The Connection program. “The mural embodies every youth in Niagara Falls and beyond. Chuck Tingley is a genius, and I am thrilled that The Connection gets to view and celebrate this masterpiece every day.”

Saladin Allah, Public Projects Coordinator for the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and Director of Community Engagement at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, voiced that “The absence of public art in our city has been our evidence of opportunity, and we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of a renaissance that is boldly shaping our city’s arts and cultural heritage ecosystem.”

"I'm honored to be included in the Niagara Falls public art movement, specifically here at The Connection building and what they represent,” shared mural artist Chuck Tingley. “[It is] a place for the youth that's open daily for them to congregate, play games, and to learn and grow. Project Overview

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) is issuing this Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design and creation of a mural at DiCamillo Bakery, located at 811 Linwood Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14305. The budget for this project is up to $40,000.00, with a target completion date by November 30th, 2023.

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area preserves, protects, and promotes historic, natural, and cultural resources in an 11-mile expanse that stretches from Niagara Falls State Park in Niagara Falls, NY to Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, NY. The NFNHA is one of 55 areas across the United States designated by Congress as a landscape where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a nationally important landscape. The NFNHA tells these nationally-important stories that celebrate the diverse heritage of Niagara Falls.

At the heart of all NFNHA projects is community engagement and collaboration. Over the course of over 30 public art projects over the past five years, the NFNHA has created an inclusive process that prioritizes the input and feedback of community members, particularly in the Highland Community, where the majority of these projects are located. The process employed by the NFNHA offers community input and feedback at each step of the project, from the creation of subject matter and themes, to the selection of the artist, to the proposed designs themselves.

Public art projects foster pride in communities, assist with neighborhood revitalization, and build appreciation for our community, culture, and heritage. The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area has fostered deep relationships within the community, and has proven experience implementing public art projects, including the murals at Main & Depot and along Main Street. The mural will be located at DiCamillo Bakery. This location is on a main throughfare through Niagara Falls, and sees a significant amount of foot traffic each day. The wall is approximately 18’ x 24’, made of brick, and is in relatively good condition. The mural must be installed utilizing wooden boards, and attached through a mounting and bracketing system.

The NFNHA is seeking mural that will celebrate the legacy of the DiCamillo family, and speak to the lasting importance of the DiCamillo Bakery in the City of Niagara Falls. Our goals is to create a mural that honors the heart and soul of DiCamillo Bakery, and showcases its impact on the city. Specifically, the mural should:

Create a public art mural for the new outdoor seating area at DiCamillo’s Bakery on the west side of the property that is reflective of the legacy of the bakery and the DiCamillo family that has owned and operated it for over 100 years.
The mural should be relevant to the staff of DiCamillo Bakery and its customers, and should reflect staff input in the creation of the mural.
The mural should reflect DiCamillo Bakery’s story: “an uninterrupted tradition of making wholesome hearth-baked bread and classic Italian cookies and confections for our friends and neighbors.”
The mural should complement the new outdoor seating area, creating a well-rounded outdoor space open to customers and staff.

Qualifications for DiCamillo Bakery will be reviewed by team members from DiCamillo Bakery and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area.

Applicants will be judged by the eligibility criteria listed below:

Complete application submitted by the proposal deadline.
The submitted application demonstrates evidence of professional competence.
Eligible artists should have a record of successfully completed permanent and/or temporary public art commissions in public and/or private development.
Creative approach to the proposed mural concept that is reflective of DiCamillo Bakery’s mission, vision, and the listed project goals.
Digital artwork acceptable, and digital artists encouraged to apply. If utilizing digital artwork, please include a brief explanation of your medium in your Statement of Intent.
Contracted artist is required to be flexible, accountable and work collaboratively with the NFNHA teams.

Artist Statement, that outlines your interests, describes your art practice, provides a summary of your professional experience as an artist, and addresses how that experience may qualify your for public art commissions.
Current Resume, including public art commission, exhibition, and publication history. Links to online portfolios are encouraged.
Images of previous work, including most recent commissions and realized projects. Please submit only successfully completed projects or renderings for projects that are in process.
Statement of Intent, that outlines a proposed approach to this project, including artistic medium and installation plan.

The maximum budget for this project is $40,000.00. Applicants should detail the use of funds in the budget section of their proposal.

"Light Bearers" Completed at Niagara Falls High School

Renowned artist Justin Suarez, known as @aerosolkingdom , has masterfully brought to life the stunning mural titled "Light Bearers" at Niagara Falls High School. This awe-inspiring project represents a collaboration between Niagara Falls High School and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area.

Having witnessed the success of the numerous murals gracing the city of Niagara Falls that were created as part of the NFNHA's Heritage Arts/NFMurals program, the project's stakeholders turned to the expertise of the NFNHA staff to guide their vision to fruition.

The artist chose to depict two young people holding a lantern in the midst of a labyrinth. The light from the lantern represents the path forward, through the maze of challenges that high school can present. The stars surrounding the lantern represent the way that these two young people share their light with others, providing hope and guidance to those who are lost. The circle around the labyrinth represents the completion of one journey, as well as the start of another. The labyrinth itself represents the challenges and obstacles that these two young people will face in high school, but also the potential for growth and self-discovery.

In the near future, Suarez is poised to embark on yet another captivating mural project within the community, aiming to forge a connection between the school and the community it serves.

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is seeking five artists to paint murals on Main Street and Depot Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY. The NF Murals Project on Main Street & Depot Avenue is entering its fourth and final mural making phase following completion of sixteen murals to date since 2019. Murals feature stories of freedom and champions of change in the Highland Community of Niagara Falls. The Main Street & Depot Avenue corridor is adjacent to the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center. The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area’s NF Murals Project unites artists with the community in a collaborative process, rooted in historical and contemporary themes, that will transform our public spaces and inspire our local citizens.

Through our work, we take a creative approach to projects with the objective to foster pride of place and support for our community. We believe that art creates change, transforming public spaces and individual lives by improving the neighborhoods we live and work in, and by convening messages of hope, empathy, compassion, and social justice. The murals continue to encourage visitors to extend their stay in the City of Niagara Falls and assist in the long-term revitalization efforts of the Highland Community of Niagara Falls.

Mural Project Background

Here in the Highland Community, many people are the most recent in a long line of Black residents whose presence in Niagara Falls made it one of the most important places of courage and resistance to oppression in the United States from the time of the Underground Railroad to today. These stories of heroism are documented and told at the adjacent Underground Railroad Heritage Center. The NF Murals Project will continue to share these stories and others as it relates to theme of freedom, and specifically what freedom means to the residents of Niagara Falls.

Project Specifications

Any artist residing in Western New York or Southern Ontario are eligible to submit their qualifications for consideration. Experience with public art and/or large murals is preferred but not required.
Upon selection, artists will be given a stipend for the project and all necessary materials will be provided by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. Artists may specify materials needed for their work.
Each mural may range from in size and will be executed on a prepped and primed concrete wall surface along Main Street and Depot Avenue.

Artist Responsibilities

Each selected artist will design and complete a mural which is responsive to community input.
Artists will work with the project team to develop the concept of the mural.
Artists may be asked to participate in public programming around the mural making process.

Project Overview

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) is issuing this Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the design and creation of a mural for the new community garden space at Heart, Love & Soul on 930 Ontario Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14305. The budget for the project is up to $20,000 with a target install timeframe of mid-April, 2023. This mural will allow Heart, Love & Soul guests and the surrounding community to not only to enjoy a natural greenspace, but to promote wellness in all forms.

The mission of Heart, Love & Soul is to “[nourish] people in need – body, mind & soul – in partnership with others.” Heart, Love & Soul was founded in 1983 as a food pantry to collect and distribute food to community members struggling with unemployment and financial instability in the North End neighborhood of Niagara Falls, New York. The organization has been a fixture in the community for 40 years, and provides the neighborhood with food assistance, human services, and social care. Heart, Love & Soul works collaboratively with other partner organizations through its new Daybreak Program to provide social care services to Niagara Falls residents, and has “provided over 9,405 amenities to guests” since starting in 2021. Heart, Love & Soul is deeply embedded into the fabric of the North End community, and is committed to providing the highest standard of care possible for its community, and to creating positive change.

Public art projects foster pride in communities, assist with neighborhood revitalization, and build appreciation for our community, culture, and heritage. The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area has fostered deep relationships within the community, and has proven experience implementing public art projects, including the murals at Main & Depot and along Main Street. Working together, Heart, Love & Soul and the NFNHA will administer the project and work with the selected artist to create a storytelling experience in the new community garden and outdoor space.

Goals

The NFNHA is seeking a mural that reflect the breadth and depth of the Niagara Falls community, and speak to the neighborhood revitalization currently taking place in the North End community. Our goal is to reflect the people important to Heart, Love & Soul and Niagara Falls, and amplify our values of dignity, social justice, stewardship, and collaboration in our neighborhood. Specifically, the mural should:

Create a public art mural in the Heart, Love & Soul community garden on the full span of the west side of the building that is reflective of the Niagara Falls community and helps to promote wellness with community members.
The mural should be relevant to the people who utilize Heart, Love & Soul services and should reflect community input in the creation of the mural.
The mural should reflect Heart, Love & Soul’s vision: “to build an equitable community that eliminates barriers, ensures opportunity, and transforms lives.”
The mural will compliment the new community garden and infrastructure, creating a well-rounded outdoor space open to all.

Artist Statement, that outlines your interests, describes your art practice, provides a summary of your professional experience as an artist, and addresses how that experience may qualify you for public art commissions.
Current Resume, including public art commission, exhibition and publication history. Links to online portfolios are encouraged.
Images of previous work, including most recent commissions and realized projects. Please submit only successfully completed projects or renderings for projects that are in process.
Statement of Intent, that outlines a proposed approach to this project and any initial ideas for mural design, which may include an image (design, sketch, etc).
Project budget, including artist fee, supplies, travel, insurance and any other requirements.

Proposals will be accepted between February 28th and March 15th. Applicants will be notified following the deadline whether or not they have been accepted for the project. The mural project must be completed in April 2023.

The maximum budget for this project is $20,000. Applicants should detail the use of funds in the budget section of their application.

Qualifications for the Heart, Love & Soul mural project will be reviewed by team members from Heart, Love & Soul and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. Applicants will be judged by the eligibility criteria listed below:

Complete application submitted by the application deadline.
The submitted application demonstrates evidence of professional competence.
Eligible artists should have a record of successfully completed permanent and/or temporary public art commissions in public and/or private development.
Creative approach to the proposed mural concept that is reflective of Heart, Love & Soul’s mission, vision, and the listed project goals.
Contracted artist is required to be flexible, accountable and work collaboratively with the Heart, Love & Soul and NFNHA teams.

Main St. Murals Celebration & Breakfast

Everyone is invited to the "We Are the Community" Main Street Murals Celebration and Breakfast event to celebrate the new community murals installed on boarded up storefronts along Main Street in Niagara Falls. The Breakfast will take place on Saturday, November 19th, 9:00am-11:00am at 1700 Main Street in the lot between The Connection and the former Family Dollar building. Free hot breakfast, coffee and hot chocolate will be provided by Black House Beignet, Power City Eatery , Di Camillo Bakery , and Hyde Park Café . At 10:00am, the community is invited to join a group photo in front of the We Are the Community Mural at 1802 Main Street, one block north. The event is free and open to all. Please dress warmly as it will be an outdoor event on a cold day!

The Breakfast will celebrate the recent community mural making, encourage participation in discussions with one another around the future of Main Street and to bring people together with renewed energy. These murals bring new life to the street that was once a bustling and vibrant business district throughout the majority of the 20th Century and is fondly remembered as such. It boasted businesses during its years such as Silberberg’s, Jenss Bros, Lincoln’s, Buck's Shoes, the French Millinery Shoppe, the Royal Chef, and Hart to Hart Furniture to name a few. It held businesses during its years such as Silberberg’s, Jenss Bros, Murdison’s, Lincoln’s and Hart to Hart Furniture. Many stories could be told of downtown shopping in an era long since passed.

This mural, History Lives Here, was envisioned to bring visibility to the past, present and future of Main Street. What life did this building witness, how did it serve our community, and what could it be in the future? Our community is our guiding voice for what the future holds for Main Street.

To add on to the History Lives Here mural at 2018 Main Street, the next public art component will include window banners featuring photos of our community! All are welcome to submit high-resolution photos of themselves and others (with appropriate permissions) for inclusion on the building. The public art installation will be temporary and will serve to say we care about Main Street – it is our history, our present and our future.

Community mural making is coming to Main Street in the North End of Niagara Falls! Beginning today, Friday, October 21, and for the next week, two buildings will be beautified with public art murals on their boarded up storefronts. Located at 1708 Main Street and 2018 Main Street, the community mural making process will be led by artists Tyshaun Tyson and Amira Moore, alongside the Niagara Falls Murals team of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area!!

We are excited to invite VOLUNTEERS to help paint the new murals, "History Lives Here" and "Imagine the Possibilities". We hope you can join us, everyone is welcome! The two murals will kick off the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area's upcoming Main Street public art and placemaking initiatives. 2022 Niagara Falls Jazz Fest

(Niagara Falls, NY) – The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective are announcing the first annual Niagara Falls Jazz Fest to take place on Sunday, July 17th, 2022, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Beloved Community Center (lawn), 1710 Calumet Ave, Niagara Falls, NY 14305. This event is a free community concert that highlights “Women in Jazz” and reflects on the influential history of jazz and music in Niagara Falls.

Attendees will enjoy rhythmic performances by Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame Inductee, Marsha McWilson, and Curtis Lundy and Umoja, featuring Harpist Cassie Watson Francillon. Food trucks Dirty Bird, Cater 2 U Kitchen, and Buffalo Burger Bros will be serving their signature fares, and tasty sweet treats will be available from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM from Kona Ice and The Yummmm Truck.

The Niagara Falls Jazz Fest was created in collaboration with Dawn Berry-Walker, daughter of jazz legend James “Pappy” Martin, and Founder of the Pappy Martin Masten Jazz Festival. Pappy Martin and his brother, John “Spider” Martin, grew up in the Highland neighborhood of Niagara Falls, and famously played at renowned establishments including the Ontario House. To highlight Spider Martin’s story, the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area commissioned Buffalo artist, Edreys Wajed, in 2019 to create a mural of Spider Martin along Main Street, bringing Spider Martin’s story into public space for the first time.

Honoring the Martins’ legacy, the Niagara Falls Jazz Fest will present its annual festival by celebrating women of jazz whose musical influence sparked a movement like no other. “Musical storytelling resounds throughout our community, and we are excited for people to come together to enjoy notes by jazz greats such as Marsha McWilson and Cassie Watson Francillon,” says Saladin Allah, Niagara Falls National Heritage Area Project Coordinator, “it will be an event not to miss.”

We are seeking four artists for our #NFMURALS project.

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is seeking four artists to paint murals on Main Street and Depot Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY. The NF Murals Project on Main Street & Depot Avenue is entering its fourth mural making phase following completion of sixteen murals to date since 2019. Murals feature stories of freedom and champions of change in the Highland Community of Niagara Falls.

Artists are invited to submit their qualifications for consideration. Upon selection, chosen artists will be given a set for the project and supplied the materials necessary to complete one mural each. Artists will work with the project team and with the community to develop the concepts of the murals.

Wellness Walk on April 24, 2022

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative are partnering together once again to host “Walk With Us,” a 5K wellness walk, from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 24, beginning at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave. West.

Organizers said, “The walk offers an opportunity for members of the community to participate in a physical activity that also improves mental health while engaging in social connection.”

Those interested in participating in the walk can find more information and register here .

The walk has two routes, the first of which is 1.5 miles and follows the Niagara Gorge Trail toward Whirlpool State Park where there are restrooms. The second route is about 3 miles total, and goes to Devil’s Hole and back to the Heritage Center.

“Walk With Us” was created in 2021. It was designed as a way “to combat the isolation and sedentary lifestyle many people had experienced due to the pandemic.” The event had a turnout of a few hundred participants of all ages and abilities, as it is accessible for everyone in the community.

Brian Archie, co-chair for the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative, is again looking forward to the walk, and hopes it will continue each year.

“Walking is an accessible, mindful exercise that can help us work through negative emotions,” Archie said. “Exercise, getting outside, and safely being around others are all important ways that we can help prevent current or future mental health crises.”

Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center Sets Black History Month Events

As part of the commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of and bringing visibility to Black stories in Niagara Falls, there are several events and programs slated in February to celebrate Black History Month.

This year’s theme is “Illuminating Voices: Connecting the Past to the Present.” In February, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center will honor Black History Month by celebrating the rich history of people of African descent in Western New York by connecting historical events to modern social issues.

The Heritage Center offers this kind of programming year round, so to enhance it during Black History Month, there is a wide variety of virtual, in-person and hybrid programs planned to reach audiences across Western New York and beyond. Programming includes youth workshops, musical performances, the continued speaker series, and the grand opening of the historic Cataract House Restaurant and Academy in downtown Niagara Falls.

More information is available on the Heritage Center’s website . Most of the events take place in the Atrium of the Heritage Center in Niagara Falls or are available virtually. Events are as follows:

● “Frederick Douglass WNY: By Any Means Necessary,” 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the Atrium, 825 Depot Ave. West. The kickoff to Black History Month welcomes the Heritage Center’s own Dr. James Ponzo in “Frederick Douglas WNY: By Any Means Necessary,” a presentation on the life of Frederick Douglass, including the impact that he had on Rochester and all of Western New York. This is a hybrid event and pricing is $8 for singles, $12 for couples, and $25 for families.

● African Drumming & Dancing Community Fitness Class with Packard Court Community Center, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in the Atrium at 825 Depot Ave. West, Niagara Falls. This community celebration embraces the resilience and power that Black History Month embodies. Join us in a collaborative event with the Packard Court Community Center in an African Dance Class Jamboree featuring drums, music, laughs, and educational conversation. These two sessions are part of the free 10-Week African Drumming and

Dance Community fitness classes at the Packard Court Community Center to promote health and wellness, sponsored by the Niagara Falls Housing Authority and Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative. This is a free, hybrid event.

● “Illuminating Voices of our Future,” StoryTime Animation with the Atlantis School for Gifted Youngsters, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb 5, in the Heritage Center’s Meeting Room, 825 Depot Avenue West. This in-person collaborative event allows eight youngsters ages 9 to 12 to be the storytellers of their own tales over the four Saturdays. These eight students will create, produce, and record voice overs for a StoryTime animation episode that features their own character. Saladin Allah, Visitor Experience Specialist, Community Liaison, and the Founder of the Atlantis School for Gifted Youngsters, will create animations of each child to bring their character to life! The cost is $40 and that covers all four weeks. The Heritage Center is hoping to fund scholarships for each child. Register here .

● “Illuminating Voices of our Future,” Storytime Animation with the Atlantis School for Gifted Youngsters, Part 2, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb 12, in the Heritage Center’s Meeting Room; 825 Depot Avenue West, Niagara Falls.

● “Black Visions” & “Alma Thomas & Me.” This collaboration with the Explore & More Children’s Museum will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb 12, in two locations: the Atrium at 825 Depot Avenue West, Niagara Falls; and at Explore & More Children’s Museum, 130 Main St., Buffalo. This informative and empowering event will allow kids ages 8 to 12 to learn about important Black figures from the past and present who are role models for children and young adults in an effort to inspire them to be everything they wish to be and more. Participants at Explore & More will be led by Heritage Center staff. They will be given a short informative lesson about important and influential Black figures past and present. They will then be guided through the creation of vision boards in an effort to empower today’s youth. Participants at the Heritage Center will be led by Explore & More staff. They will receive a short informative lesson on art, Black artists, and will be guided in a watercolor painting activity inspired by Alma Thomas. This is a free, in-person event, and capacity is 20 youth at the Heritage Center, but there are no capacity restrictions at Explore & More. Register here .

● “Blacks in Niagara Falls” with Dr. Michael Boston in collaboration with the Niagara Falls Public Library, 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 15, in the Atrium, 825 Depot Ave. West. Dr. Michael Boston, associate professor at SUNY Brockport, will present “Blacks in Niagara Falls,” detailed study of the history of African Americans in a small upstate New York city, from the days of the Underground Railroad to the deindustrialization of the 1980s. Blacks in Niagara Falls narrates and analyzes the history of Black Niagarans from the days of the Underground Railroad to the Age of Urban Renewal. This is a hybrid event and prices are $8 for singles, $12 for couples, and $25 for families.

● African Drumming & Dancing Community Fitness Class with Packard Court Community Center, Part 2, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the Atrium at 825 Depot Ave. West, Niagara Falls. This is a free, hybrid event.

● Cataract House Restaurant and Academy and Gallery Opening, 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb 18, at 310 Rainbow Blvd, Niagara Falls. The grand opening of the new F Bites Cataract House Restaurant and Academy is a free, in-person event celebrating the continuation of the legacy that is the Cataract House. The event also includes a micro gallery opening featuring Artist Tyshaun Tyson. Chef Bobby Anderson of Hell’s Kitchen and F-Bites is the Owner and Head Chef of this fine establishment with cuisine that reflects the historic African American meals once served. Tyshaun Tyson is one of the two artists to complete the “Black Lives Matter” mural on Main Street near the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center.

● “Illuminating Voices of our Future,” Storytime Animation with the Atlantis School for Gifted Youngsters, Part 3, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb 19, in the Heritage Center’s Meeting Room; 825 Depot Avenue West, Niagara Falls.

● “Illuminating Voices of our Future,” Storytime Animation with the Atlantis School for Gifted Youngsters, Part 4, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb 26, in the Heritage Center’s Meeting Room; 825 Depot Avenue West, Niagara Falls.

● “History in WNY’s Backyard in collaboration with Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, 4 to 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb 26. This is the largest and most anticipated collaborative event of the month, and the first ever Buffalo and Niagara Falls Black History crossover tour. The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center and the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor will present this two- hour Black History virtual experience of the Heritage Center, the Nash House , Michigan Street Baptist Church , WUFO MIX1080AM , and the Colored Musicians Club . This is a virtual event and tickets are $20.

Niagara Falls is One of 26 U.S. Cities Awarded Asphalt Art Grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies

(Niagara Falls, NY) — Niagara Falls is one of 26 U.S. cities across the country to be selected to receive a $25,000 Asphalt Art Grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The grant application was submitted by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls. It aims to infuse impactful community-driven advocacy and development in the North End of Niagara Falls by enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists, improving public spaces, and installing vibrant crosswalk murals at intersections.

“We are so excited for this opportunity in the North End community, a neighborhood with a legacy of creativity, resilience and courage. It’s an extension of our ongoing work with the community to bring attention to the City’s Underground Railroad history and local stories”, says Ally Spongr, Interim Director of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, an organization working in partnership with the NFNHA and NF Murals.

“This is excellent news. In our predominantly Black community here in the North End of Niagara Falls, active community participation in these art projects have enhanced a sense of pride, ownership and has given a voice to our community’s authentic identity,” says Saladin Allah, project coordinator for the NF Murals, the public art initiative of the NFNHA.

The partnership of the NFNHA and the City of Niagara Falls has pointed to three specific locations that form a triangle in the North End: three major intersections connecting high traffic areas to the widely used Legends Park recreational basketball courts, the Niagara Falls Public Library, Henry Abate Elementary School, and the Niagara Falls Transportation Authority Portage Road Transportation Center.

“As Bloomberg Philanthropies points out,” says Mayor Robert Restaino of the City of Niagara Falls, “Vibrant public artwork and smarter street design can inspire residents and have tangible impacts on improving safety and the lives of our residents. These creative initiatives are important to enhance Niagara Falls, strengthen our pride, and bring enthusiasm for something better to come.”

Call for Artists: NF Murals @ Main Street @ Depot Avenue

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is seeking four to six artists to paint murals on Main Street and Depot Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY. The NF Murals Project on Main Street & Depot Avenue is entering its third and final mural making phase following completion of sixteen murals to date since 2019. Murals feature stories of freedom and champions of change in the Highland Community of Niagara Falls. The Main Street & Depot Avenue corridor is adjacent to the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center. Mural Project Background

Project Specifications

Any artist residing in Western New York or Southern Ontario are eligible to submit their qualifications for consideration. Experience with public art and/or large murals is preferred but not required.
Upon selection, artists will be given a stipend for the project and all necessary materials will be provided by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area. Artists may specify materials needed for their work.
Each mural may range from in size and will be executed on a prepped and primed concrete wall surface along Main Street and Depot Avenue.

Artist Responsibilities

Each selected artist will design and complete a mural which is responsive to community input.
Artists will work with the project team to develop the concept of the mural.
Artists may be asked to participate in public programming around the mural making process.

Timeline

To be considered, artists are required to complete the application below and submit all necessary materials by Sunday, August 15, 2021.
Qualifications will be reviewed by the selection committee and applicants will be notified by September 3, 2021.
Selected artists will be required to schedule and complete their mural between September 15 – October 31, 2021.

The Discover Niagara Shuttle Expands To Lockport

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) announced that Discover Niagara Shuttle services will be expanded to Lockport in the 2021 season. The hop-on/hop off complimentary shuttle connects visitors and residents to approximately 30 destinations where they can discover the natural, cultural, and historic attractions located within Niagara County.

Sara Capen, Executive Director, Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, said,

“With the expansion of the service to Lockport, the Discover Niagara Shuttle connects two of our nation’s 55 National Heritage Areas — Niagara Falls National Heritage Area & Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor — where people can experience our region’s significant history, stunning natural landscape, and the remarkable communities of Niagara County. The NFNHA is proud of this vital tourism initiative and appreciative of the immense support we received from our partners and elected officials to make this possible.”

National Heritage Areas are designated by Congress and work in coordination with the National Parks Service to support community stewardship through heritage conservation, recreation, and education of nationally important sites.

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) said, “We have fought again and again to protect and fund the National Heritage Area program because of demonstrated success stories like the Discover Niagara Shuttle. The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area provides an incredible rate of return on the investments made, highlighting the places unique to the Niagara region and strengthening our economy.”

“The Discover Niagara Shuttle has been an incredible regional asset and economic driver in Western New York since its launch — allowing tourists and residents alike to easily access new restaurants, small businesses, and places to explore,” said Congressman Chris Jacobs (NY-27). “With this expansion to Lockport, the shuttle brings new adventures for travelers and new opportunities for our region. The Shuttle started as a pilot project in 2016. State legislation was essential to guaranteeing that the Shuttle has a permanent place in the community for years to come.

New York State Senate Minority Leader Robert Ortt added, “At a time when revitalizing tourism is the key to our economic future, I am excited for the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area’s expansion of the Discover Niagara Shuttle to Lockport this year. I commend all the local and state partners who have worked diligently to showcase our wondrous region.”

"As we build back from the pandemic, reigniting our tourism economy will be a critical component, and I firmly believe that the expanded Discover Niagara Shuttle will play a key role," said Senator Tim Kennedy, Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. "As this new destination is added, it will be even easier and more convenient for tourists — both local and from out-of-town — to explore all that Lockport and Niagara County has to offer."

“It is with great pleasure that we are announcing the Discover Niagara Shuttle will be starting a route from Niagara Falls to Lockport,” Angelo Morinello, New York State Assemblyman, said. “Lockport has reimagined the Lockport locks and has provided an additional tourism experience for all to enjoy. This extension of the Shuttle was made possible by a strong team effort from local officials under the leadership of Sara Capen of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, which will guarantee permanent financing for the continuation of the shuttle. The Erie Canal made it possible to begin expansion to the west, and this historic location will provide additional interest in overnight stays in Niagara County.”

The Lockport community is looking forward to the tourism opportunities that expanding the shuttle’s service area to the community will offer.

New York State Assemblyman Michael Norris said, “I was truly honored to sponsor the legislation that now paves the way for the Discover Niagara Shuttle to visit Lockport several times a week during the key tourism season. This shuttle will indeed serve as a critical catalyst to helping our local businesses and tourism destinations attract new visitors to our historic Erie Canal and Lockport Locks corridor."

“The city of Lockport is pleased to be a stop for the Discover Niagara Shuttle,” said Michelle Roman, Mayor of the City of Lockport. “This will expand opportunities for our residents and visitors to explore more of our county, as well as easy access to areas in the city to explore the history of the canal and locks, the Cornerstone Arena, Palace Theater, Kenan Center, along with our local shops and restaurants.”

The addition of Lockport to the shuttle’s schedule is thanks to an initiative passed by NFNHA partners and local officials.

Becky Wydysh, Chairman of the Niagara County Legislature, said, "I want to thank my fellow legislators who voted to dedicate bed tax revenue in support of the shuttle, especially Legislators Tony Nemi, Mike Hill, and Will Collins, who were very passionate about the shuttle extending to Lockport and points further east, and worked hard to help make this happen. Eastern Niagara County businesses will hopefully benefit from an increased number of tourists who will take advantage of all that Niagara County has to offer."

Ultimately, the new shuttle route will help form a stronger relationship between Lockport and Niagara Falls and create additional opportunities for tourism for both communities.

“I am excited at the opportunity for Niagara Falls residents and Lockport residents to now have yet another connection to one another,” said City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino. “The expansion of the Discover Niagara Shuttle adding service to Lockport allows two historic communities to connect, alongside our other neighboring communities and attractions, and giving all of our residents the ability to enjoy all the activities that both of our Cities offer.”

In addition, John Percy, President of Destination Niagara Falls USA, said, “Transportation connectivity between Niagara Falls and Lockport has been limited at best, and this new connection is a welcome addition to our tourism partners, and even more so for our visiting public. This new service will allow visitors the opportunity to visit one of our treasured locales of Lockport and its many cultural and culinary gems, while possibly extending their stay.”

Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, added, "We are thrilled to see shuttle service that connects the awe-inspiring natural wonder of Niagara Falls with the legendary heritage of the Erie Canal in Lockport. Following the press conference, attendees had the opportunity to ride the shuttle on the Lockport Loop. The shuttle will officially begin public service on Friday, May 28. Jalen Law Selected to Create Mural Inside NFTA-Metro Portage Road Transportation Center

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA-Metro) and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) have selected Jalen Law, a local, professional artist, to create a new mural inside the Portage Road Transportation Center. Based on his portfolio and prior engagement in the Niagara Falls community, Law was selected from a group of artists who responded to NFTA-Metro and NFNHA’s call for artists at the end of 2020.

NFTA-Metro and NFNHA will be hosting a press conference on Thursday, May 20, when Jalen will begin putting the mural onto the wall of the Transportation Center.

Initially, the intent for the mural was to improve the appearance of the Center’s indoor waiting area, generating feelings of comfort, safety, and pride. But with Law onboard, the project has evolved to truly connect with the residents of Niagara Falls, empowering them to have their voices heard through an interactive element that allows the public to provide feedback.

“I hope that this newest piece can ultimately be a vehicle for discussion,” he said. “Art has an amazing capability to spark conversations that can eventually lead to positive change. I’m intending to make a piece that is authentic, honest, and can truly speak to all different types of people.”

Ultimately, the mural will be a way for the community to express itself. Saladin Allah, project coordinator for the NF Murals project, has been working alongside Law in making sure the piece is meaningful and impactful for the city.

“The NF Murals project has been all about portraying the city’s people and history and celebrating the vibrancy of our community,” said Allah. “This mural is going to continue that mission, and it’s great that it’s going in a location that is seen by so many people on a daily basis.”

The location of the piece is strategic — the Portage Road Transportation Center sees over 2,000 boardings per week, to and from Buffalo and within Niagara Falls and Niagara County. Ally Spongr, project director of NFNHA, emphasized that this location is purposeful.

“The Center is central to the community,” she said. “The piece will be incredibly visible and will be able to inspire countless visitors. That’s why we are also including a QR code on the piece. Viewers will be able to scan the code and visit a webpage where they can provide feedback to us that we can take into consideration for future projects.”

NFTA-Metro is looking forward to the impact that the new artwork will have not only on the Portage Road Transportation Center, but on the transportation system in general.

“This project is a great way to enhance our transit center to create an environment that the community will be proud to use while accessing our system,” said Tom George, NFTA’s director of public transportation. “The artwork will provide a friendlier, more inviting atmosphere, while also offering a glimpse into the rich history and unique characteristics of the surrounding neighborhoods, adding positivity to the daily experience of the many people who use the NFTA-Metro services.”

NFNHA Launches Uncovering Mysteries in Niagara Falls - A Digital Archive Initiative

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) has launched a Digital Archive Initiative called, ‘Uncovering Mysteries in Niagara Falls.’ The waterfalls of Niagara Falls may be known as a natural wonder of the world, but the City of Niagara Falls role in the Underground Railroad among other historical events has intrigued researchers for decades. The highly anticipated initiative has led to the Oakwood Cemetery Burial Permit Digital Archive Project and the Niagara Falls Public Library Local History Collection Project.

Oakwood Cemetery Burial Permit Digital Archive Project

Founded in 1852, Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls, NY holds some of the city’s oldest records. The cemetery’s brittle and yellowing burial permits provide a rare and unique glimpse into early life in Niagara Falls. These documents track information such as the deceased person’s place of birth, occupation, and cause of death. Tim Baxter, Director of Operations at Oakwood Cemetery is pleased to have the opportunity to digitize their extensive burial records collection.

“We were able to partner with Shane Stephenson, owner of Archives in the Buff, a small archiving business dedicated to helping families and organizations arrange their records,” Baxter said. “He digitized over 19,000 of our records, providing an overlooked snapshot of the area throughout our 160 years. We couldn’t have done this without a grant from the NFNHA. Their continued support of history and preservation is unrivaled in Western New York.”

Phase I of the Oakwood Cemetery Burial Permit Digital Archive Project has already uncovered mysteries such as a handwritten note from 1884 by Lewis H.F. Hamilton, referred to as L.H. Hamilton. L.H. Hamilton was an important Black abolitionist and waiter at the famed Cataract House hotel, one of the most important transit points for the Underground Railroad along the entire U.S.-Canadian border. The note is a spine tingling find for anyone hungry for a physical connection to this history, and it is a rare clue for researchers, referring to a woman named Mary Cosby who was buried in L.H. Hamilton’s family plot.

Chris Bacon, NFNHA Director of Education and Development believes the archives will continue to unravel the deep history of Niagara Falls.

“The Underground Railroad was secretive by nature, but the lack of physical evidence relating to African American history reveals more about how history was recorded and preserved by those in power, such as historians, archivists, and curators,” Bacon said. “The L.H. Hamilton note is just one mystery we hope to solve as Mary Cosby has been unknown to researchers until now.”

Funding provided by the NFNHA allowed Oakwood Cemetery to digitize 19,900 burial permits dating from 1883. Preliminary work has also begun on a master index that will serve as a searchable finding aid. The NFNHA will fund Phase II of the project in 2021 with a goal of finishing the master index and making the digital records accessible to researchers.

Niagara Falls Public Library Local History Collection Project

The Niagara Falls Public Library’s (NFPL) Local History Collection launched Phase I in the Summer of 2020, uncovering stories of 19th and 20th century Niagara Falls. Records were created for 648 boxes and shelves, as well as 5,198 folders and other items. The focus of Phase I was on paper materials, documenting 7,407 prints, 469 glass and film negatives, and 1,456 slides which were all cataloged.

Courtney Geerhart, NFPL Local History Librarian, and her department are grateful for the support and funding from the NFNHA.

“Through the course of this endeavor, we hope to inventory and catalog the entirety of the Local History archives and museum objects,” Geerhart said. “This will allow for more transparency, give the public greater access to these precious resources, and allow more community engagement.”

Among the stories uncovered in Phase I are: 19th-century travel accounts and living accounts in Niagara Falls, 19th and 20th-century clerk records of the villages of Niagara Falls and Suspension Bridge, late 19th and early 20th century photographs of Niagara Falls, and DeVeaux photographs and alumni records. A letter from the Deveaux collection relating to a 1914 smallpox epidemic in Niagara Falls revealed similarities to what the nation as a whole is enduring amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

NFPL will launch Phase II this year with funding support from the NFNHA, the Dunlap Trust and the Friends of Local History.

3. Niagara Falls State Park

Niagara Falls is amazing to view in winter. In fact, the colder the day, the better. If we have a week of those 12 degree days with the nasty windy chills, that is your cue to make a plan to visit. We promise, it will be worth the chilly encounter... just bundle up! The nightly illuminations also look particularly dazzling in the winter as well, as the colors dance as they hit the ice. We can't stress this enough though: bundle up! Gloves. Hat. Scarf. Coat.

4. Old Fort Niagara

A visit to Old Fort Niagara in winter really captures your imagination. What was it like hundreds of years ago living at the fort when the temperatures dropped? Project Overview

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) and the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) is seeking an artist to create a public art mural to be located inside of the NFTA’s Portage Road Transportation Center (PRTC). The goal of the project is to enhance the atmosphere of the public indoor waiting area and address safety concerns shared by riders and community members.

Located in a bustling section of the City of Niagara Falls, the Portage Road Transportation Center sees over 2,000 boardings per week, with services to and from Buffalo and Niagara County. Within this space, there is opportunity to contribute positively to the daily experience of the many people who utilize the NFTA services. By creating a vibrant and inspiring artwork in the space, our hope is to generate feelings of comfort, safety and pride. Subsequently, the addition of a mural at the PRTC will continue to expand the growth of public art experiences in this section of the City.

Project Specifications

This Call for Artists is open to any artist residing in Western New York to submit their qualifications for consideration. The wall space is approximately 40 ft wide and 10 ft in height. Experience with public art and/or large murals is preferred but not required.

Upon selection, artists will be paid a flat fee for the project and all necessary materials will be provided at no cost to the artist. Artists may specify materials needed for their work.

Artists are required to work with the project team to develop a concept based upon rider and community feedback. Discussions will begin once the selected artist is notified.

Artists are required to submit the following for consideration:

Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Women Winning the Vote

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) has installed an extension of “The Art of Suffrage” exhibit November 2. The display is located at Power City Eatery in Niagara, Falls, NY, commemorating the 19th Amendment which secured the right of women to vote.

The exhibit was inspired by Mary Brennan-Taylor, vice president of the YWCA of the Niagara Frontier, and her personal collection of Suffrage Art, in partnership with colleague Ellen Martin. Their recent exhibit, also entitled, “The Art of Suffrage,” was installed earlier this year at the Kenan Center in Lockport, NY. Her friendship with suffragist Alice Paul and knowledge of woman suffrage were integral in this exhibit.

Executive Director of NFNHA, Sara Capen is thrilled to showcase these significant suffrage stories which empowered women to fight for their right to vote.

“I am so grateful to Mary Brennan-Taylor for allowing us to share replicas of her collection and her great knowledge with Niagara Falls,” Capen said. ”This exhibit is relevant to this day as we acknowledge the contributions of activists, past and present.”

Co-owner and chef at Power City Eatery, Joseph Hotchkiss will be offering up some suffrage themed sandwich specials this week to celebrate election day.

“I hope the public will stop by for lunch this week to take in this inspiring exhibit and learn about the movement that led to the 19th Amendment,” Hotchkiss said. “It’s an honor to display such an important part of our country’s history in our eatery.”

1. Rent a Reddy Bike

The Niagara Falls National Heritage area is a great place to explore any time of the year, but fall brings some unique opportunities as we experience the beauty of summer giving way to autumn. This seasonal change brings bright, colorful leaves to the Niagara Gorge before they arrive in other places, as well as small communities festive with decorations and fun. While COVID-19 certainly has had an impact this year, there is still plenty to do is we let go of summer and slip into the season of pumpkin spice!

Fall is actually the perfect weather for getting out and exploring our National Heritage Area on two wheels. 3. Visit a Farmer's Market

Just outside of the quaint Village of Youngstown, you'll find two top notch Farmer's Markets at Tom Tower's Farm Market and Sanger Farms & Bakery . Both offer a rustic farm experience, fresh fruits and vegetables, pumpkins and other fall must-haves, and apple picking.

Niagara Falls Heritage Arts Begins 2020 NF Murals Season

(Buffalo, NY) – Niagara Falls Heritage Arts, the public art initiative of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, has announced it’s Fall 2020 mural season with three artists lined up for the NF Murals project. NF Murals was initiated in 2019 for a successful season with eight artists. The project connects the public with contemporary art, showcasing the area’s rich heritage and culture.

NF Murals highlights the deeply rooted strength and pride of residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. A new logo has been designed to inspire the discovery of art and history which NF Murals shares with the public. They have also launched a new website at nfmurals.org dedicated to following the artists’ process and the inspiration behind their mural concepts.

LaShonda Davis is one of the artists lined up this season, depicting Uhuru Love in a beautiful mural at the cross streets of Main and Depot. Love was born in Niagara Falls, NY is a widely recognized artist who is best known for her artwork exhibits in the 1960’s.

“Uhuru’s work stood for freedom, and that’s why it meant so much for me to be a part of this project.” Davis said.

Another artist this season, Princessa Williams has begun work on a mural depicting the late Congressman John Lewis. Williams is excited to share her work with the public.

“Many people do not know that Mr. Lewis has family members in Niagara Falls,” Williams said. “I am honored to share my art with others and invoke conversations on Lewis’ critical role in the civil rights movement. It will be exciting to honor him together with his family.”

Along with Williams and Davis, Jalen Law has begun his depiction of Calvin “Pop” Porter, a Niagara Falls boxer who made it to the American Olympics and went professional in 1982.

“My design is built with the intention of shedding light on Porter’s life through intentionally using vibrant colors,” Law said. “When viewers see this mural, I want the colors to pull them into the portrait, to educate them on who ‘Pop’ was and what he means for the City of Niagara Falls.”

100 Years of Life on Main Street: Remembering Our Past to Shape our Future

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) is launching 100 Years of Life on Main Street: Remembering Our Past to Shape our Future, a multimedia oral history project to document life in the North End of the City of Niagara Falls. The project is being sponsored by Blue Cardinal Capital who is investing in the future of Main Street.

A collaborative effort, NFNHA has partnered with students at The Connection teen center which is participating in Worksource One's Summer Youth Employment Program to capture contemporary images of the city’s North End and to conduct oral history interviews. Around a dozen students have been equipped with digital cameras to photograph around the city and compare them to photos from the past.

Romello Kemp, an incoming senior at Niagara Falls High School is excited to learn about the neighborhood he grew up in through the project.

“I’ve lived in the neighborhood for years and have never known its history,” Kemp said. “This will be a good opportunity to learn more about where we spend so much time while also building our skills and resumes.”

NFNHA has also teamed up with the Niagara Falls Public Library and individuals across the country to curate a multimedia exhibition that shares the past, the present and the future revival of Main Street.

There is a deep history of shops and restaurants on the city’s North End, such as Newberry’s and Woolworth’s 5 and 10, Dillard’s Hat Store, and Mills Jewelry to name a few. As some of these businesses closed, others persisted with grit and determination: DiCamillo Bakery, Shauntae’s Hat and Fashions, the Book Corner and more.

Sara Capen, Executive Director for the NFNHA, believes the North End will thrive once again, and she is excited to launch a project she has long wanted to undertake.

“Main Streets are the core of communities,” Capen said. “They have borne witness to a place’s highs and lows. Main Street, Niagara Falls is no different. Each block tells a story and contains layers of memories that provide a sense of place. It is our hope that we will be able to collect those memories and create a story that spans generations and carry it forward into the future.”

Bob Richardson, Founder and Managing Partner of Blue Cardinal Capital is in great support of this exhibit.

"Our company is investing in the neighborhood, and we want to help this community grow and prosper once again,” Richardson said. “We hope everyone in Western New York will come to experience the diversity and inspiring stories that make this street a center of life and culture in the region. Celebrating the past enables the community to welcome and fully appreciate the renaissance of the North end of Niagara Falls."

The oral histories collected as part of this project will be showcased alongside Blue Cardinal’s plans for the historic preservation of several North End Main Street properties. The Life on Main Street exhibit will be open to the public in the Niagara Falls Amtrak Station later this year.

NFNHA is seeking additional sponsors for this project which would allow the project to expand beyond the North End to include all of Main Street, continue youth engagement for several months and fully share the story of Main Street, Niagara Falls across multiple platforms.
